Things all men should know to protect their fertility.
- Wear boxer shorts, not underpants, as they are looser fitting and allow sperm to circulate more freely.
- If you have a laptop computer, DON'T use it on your knee.
- Don't have hot baths, warm will do. Sperm live in colder temperatures and heat kills them.
- Quit smoking. Smoking damages sperm DNA.
- Stop drinking alcohol at least 3 months prior to trying for a baby, as this also lowers your chances of becoming a father.
- Cut down on junk and fattening foods as these cause free radicals which damage sperm. Eat portions of fresh fruit and vegetables each day. Try to include raw foods in your diet.
- Limit your exposure to chemicals which may cause free radicals. Really toxic chemicals you should avoid are: Formaldehyde (also called Formalin), found in soaps, shower gels, shampoos, some paints and vaccines. It is a class 1 carcinogen (capable of causing cancer), Aspartame, an artificial sweetner, found in diet soda drinks, some flavoured mineral waters, sugar substitutes and sweets. It is a neuro-toxin which can damage numerous parts of the body and can cause irregular heart beat, heart attacks and even death if the person ingests a lot, Mercury (also called thimerosal), found in some thimometers, some dental fillings and vaccines for adults. This is one of the most toxic substances known to man and there is no safe level for humans. Lead - this is in some paints and DIY products, in pipes in old housing and stain glass windows. Any lead products in your home should be removed prior to trying for a baby, as this can cause miscarriage. Phenoxyethanol - this is a preservative which is the main ingredient of anti-freeze. It is present in shampoos, soaps, hand and body creams, cleansing wipes and vaccines.
- You should limit your usage of computers and TV, to cut down your exposure to radiation. If you work around computers, get your employer to fit the computer with an anti-glare screen which also reduces the radiation.
- Take a well man supplement of vitamins and antioxidants. Consider talking to your doctor or a nutritional therapist to find out which remedy is best for you. Healthy man means healthy sperm.
- Do some regular exercise each week, such as walking or swimming. Exercise causes our brains to produce endorphins, which are the body's natural pain killer. These can increase the production of sperm, as well as making you feel happy.
