» mysweetpea - Re: WEIGHT GAIN

I gained about 10 lbs when I was on Yasmin. When I went off of it, I assumed I'd lose the weight. Not the case! Ladies, if you're looking for a quick and effective way to lose lbs, try the South Beach diet. It's really tough in the beginning, but it works. You can buy the book for, like, $8. Basically, you don't eat ANY carbs for a few weeks, then you gradually add good carbs back into your diet. I lost all the weight in 3 weeks. Hope this helps!!

Mysweetpea, I'm always wary of diets that lead to fast weight loss. Most of the initial loss is water anyway....anyway, I wanted to contribute to this forum in case other women who are considering Nuvaring read this. I have been using Nuvaring for 5 months now and it has been the best hormonal contraceptive I have ever used. I have not gained weight, infact my figure is looking better; firmer breasts, slimmer in the waist. Yasmin used to dry me up below and decreased my sex drive drastically. I bled contantly on Implanon and had it removed after 5 months. It just seems to me that all women are different and different contraceptives work better or worse for different people. So if you are considering Nuvaring, please don't be put off by comments about weight gain. You should try it because I have read a lot of forums where women swear by it. The low dose of hormones seems to be very good for many women who used to suffer side effects on other contraceptives like the pill. You know how you feel normal and well when you aren't on the pill, that is how I feel on Nuvaring. All the best!!

In response to Nuvaring weight gain posted by jbling1982:

I started the Nuva Ring around 1 1/2 years ago. When I started I was 5'8" and 145lbs. When I went in for my first check-up after having started the Nuva Ring I had lost 10 lbs. The nurse told me it probably wasn't do to the ring but the fact that I was getting married in a few months and probably stressed. I agreed with her because I hadn't been exercising or eating differently. I'm 170lbs now. I got on the scale last night and I'm only 5lbs lighter than my husband. I just couldn't stop crying. I hadn't thought that the ring could do that. And now after reading these comments I realize that I have had some of the same problem as others. I want to go off of it sooo bad.

ok, so I cant even start to tell you how irritating it is, per my doctors advice, I went on nuvaring even though I know I hate hormone birth control. after only 2 months I gained 10 pounds, and i am STARVING all the time. I have already decided to get off of it. ALSO- The bleeding is rediculous! It goes on and on! I hate this and I cant believe its on the market. Its birth control because nobody will want you after you gain the weight and act so crabby all the time...lol
Im so sorry ladies - anyone who has experienced this.
PLEASE if you are thinking of using this- DONT!!

OH Thank God! I thought I was the only one! I had taken nuva ring before and nothing happened. Then I started again last year and I'm 24 and 5'5" at 124...then I gained to the point that I'm now 160! I noticed there was some weight gain but figured it was better to be a tiny bit heavier than pregnant...35 pounds later I've changed my mind... I was taking 4 hard core dance classes and the weight still didn't go...screw this! Cheers to condoms. I hope I get back to normal soon. I'm tired of feeling like a balloon.

» tshum20 - nuva ring

In response to nuva ring posted by rickann:

Hi,
I am having that problem right now with the nuva ring. I was on it for about 6 months and my sex drive slowly disappeard. I thought it was the stress of getting married but it wasn't. Then I gained 8 lbs over 2 weeks and have not been able to lose a pound. I work out every day and have been eating abut 1500 or less calories a day. I have been off of it for 6 1/2 weeks and still no weight loss and also no period. I am so depressed and frustrated, none of my clothes fit anymore and I feel so fat and bloated. This is the heaviest I have been in years and the ironic thing is that I'm eating a lot better than I was back then.. Please tell me what has happened to you since your posting in June....Thanks

In response to nuva ring posted by tshum20:
I almost cried reading all of these posts. As you can tell I have been a MESS!!! My gyn has me on the nuvaring continuosly and I don't leave it out a week!!! I cry all the time about things I would usually not bawl about. My husband looks at me like ohh my who is this crazy girl crying about puppies and having no dr. pepper haha. Poor guy. I was getting really scared being 23 and married for 3 years with no sex drive!!!!Not to mention trying to explain this to my husband. I am slowly adding weight and not able to lose it no matter what I do. I can glady say tonight is my last night on the horrid Nuvaring!
Any suggestions anyone about a birth control with not so many side effects?

» JenAtlanta - I Went Off the Ring for Good on Monday, April 7th! :)

I'm very happy to say that I took my ring out for the LAST time on Monday, and despite what will most likely be lots of migraines (one minor already on Tuesday), nausea, tiredness, etc . . . while my body adjusts to being Ring-free for 2.5 years, I couldn't be happier! I'm assuming this all will happen from withdrawal given that these are my PMS symptoms and period symptoms from when I take the Ring out until I put it in again when my period has stopped.

In my case I was on the Ring not for birth control (my boyfriend has a vasectomy and we 100% do not want children--not indepedently and not as a couple) . . . but because Fosamax wasn't bringing up my bone density level enough and my Osteoporosis case was unique and severe. I was diagnosed at 28 and had a -4.3 hip and -4.1 spine score! My GYN put me on Fosamax not noting that it was really designed for post-menopausal women. The next year I consulted with an Endocrinologist who promptly took me off of it and pleaded with me to go on hormones since it was obvious to him given my abnormal periods (like 6-7 a year) that I wasn't ovulating and wasn't producing enough estrogen to have regular periods nor build bone. So, I went on the Ring.

Starting on the Ring in Feb. 2006 I was 108lbs (and 5'5"). If I was more restrictive of my carbs, such as when I had a photoshoot or a gig (I'm an actress/model), I was 106lbs. I am now sitting at a not-so-pretty 116lb and no matter how much I watch my diet I cannot lose weight. I just kept gradually gaining it over the last two years, especially in the last six months. As well, when I go to the gym it's like I cannot build muscle. Before Nuva Ring I could indeed build muscle--not bulk up like a man, but at least build some nice, lean muscle. To make matters worse, Nuva Ring changed my body shape. I used to have a flat booty, tiny lil' bird thighs, and decently curvy hips, but not excessively. Nuva Ring changed the shape of those parts. My hips are much larger/wider, I have a jiggly butt, and my thighs are unrecognizable. Straight-on they are triangle shaped whereas they use to be oval if that makes sense. Granted my boyfriend LOVES my new body, but I'm not used it and it's really getting in the way of my modeling since I'm not as confident in my new body. Super curvy is great for some women, but I'm used to being just normal curvy. I'm soft everywhere and I jiggle when I walk. I just feel gross and I'm really sick of buying new clothes as my size changes.sad

Aside from just the weight gain, since being on the Ring my sex drive has gradually waned until it basically became non-existent about a year ago. My poor boyfriend of five years hasn't dealt with this too well and thinks that I just don't find him attractive anymore. Not true. I just could take or leave sex after getting on the Ring. On a 100% scale, my drive is 5%. I don't even, well, um, have "solo sex" anymore. I seriously just don't ever have a sex drive.

Finally, before starting the Ring I maybe had 3 or 4 migraines in my life. Since being on the Ring, about 2 migraines a month are the norm for me. I'm SO over it! I can only put so much Excedrine Migraine in my system and miss so much work!

Even though I wish I had built up bone density in the last year, when my scan a few weeks ago revealed that I had stayed the same in my hip and lost 4% in my spine, my Endocrinologist agreed that estrogen was just not helping me anymore. Granted it had made a significant improvement in my bone density the first 1.5 years, but after that did nothing.

So, he agreed that I could come off of it and I am doing just that! happy Monday night I took my Ring out for the last time. I look forward to weight loss, no more migraines, and gosh darnit (!) a sex drive again! I'll come back here in a few weeks and let everyone know how I'm doing.

» sparkles0126 - Nuva Ring Weight Gain

Okay, so it's not just me. Thank god. I am 24 years old and I've been on birth control before, but I've never gained as much weight as I have on NuvaRing. I am vegan, I work out 5 times a week and I do triatholons. I used to weigh 160lbs, and I am now sitting at 180lbs. I'm done with it.

I'm schocked that there aren't any doctor comments on here, don't any doctors agree that the horomones could be causing weight gain? I know none of my gynos have ever told me that birth control would make me gain weight.

» CJ7776 - Moodiness and FAT ARMS - not worth it.

I have been on the ring for a little over a year. I have gained weight - but it's like all bloat. My arms are fat for the first time in my life. Even fatter than when I made the mistake of being on Depo-provera. (They call it birth control - I tell you, I didn't want to have sex on Depo, and I was fat and depressed and I didn't have a period - it was a sex deterrent, that's for sure)...
But the worst thing by far with the ring, is the fact that when I put it in after my 3 day period and ring-free week, I turn into an absolute monster. I become irritated at everything, upset, crying, I have tried to break up with my loving boyfriend once a month, every month, on the day I put the damn ring in. He can't take it anymore, I can't take it anymore.
I am going to just get an IUD. I can't take the hormones. They are so horrible for my body, my emotions, etc. And with everyone talking about the side effects like blood clots, I'm just done. I am done with this horrible thing.
It says it gradually releases the hormones? I beg to differ. It's like a waterfall of insanity as soon as I put it in. I do admit, during week 2 and 3, I am fine, everyone is happy. But the week before and the first week on... I am just not my laid-back, happy-go-lucky self.
Self-loathing, paranoia, meanness? These are not my personality. I strongly advise against using this birth control method... especially if you don't want to get FAT. I had the pill in college, and gained 15 pounds, and stayed at the 15 pounds, but with this ring, it just keeps piling up. I spent the past 3 months exercising, watching my food intake. Nothing helps. My belly is big. It's a disaster.
The ONLY upside is that I grew a full cup size - now I'm a double d, which my boyfriend loves, but for the love of god, my ass... my belly... my thighs! My upper arms.... nightmare.
