In response to Nuvaring / weight gain posted by shutter912:

SO excited to read your post. I put on 5 extra pounds that are just killing me. My diet and excersize are the same, but my OBGYN insisted that it couldnt be the ring becuase there are less hormones in the ring than in oral contraceptives.but after reading all your experiences she may be wrong. Has anyone else moved from the pill to the ring and noticed the weight gain? I think i'm going to go back to the pill, even though it's so inconvenient, and blame this weight on the ring! THanks all!

I have been on the nuvaring for 14 months. It hasn't been that great of an experience. Like most of you I have gained a little weight, but most uncomfortable thing is the abdominal pain that I feel all day. Has anyone else had this?

Thank God I found this site and bless you all. I am 35, two small kids, and recently lost 40 pounds with 15 more to go. I just started the ring two weeks ago and have already gained two pounds. I am a religious (10-12 hours a week of hard core workouts)and I eat really well (think weight lifting diet) and I knew something was up. Not only that but the bloating and constipation are more than I can bear. The ring is coming out next week when I am supposed to be ring free. Thank you everyone for posting.
Take Care

In response to Nuvaring weight gain posted by clbelle:
OMG - I am so happy to have found this website. My OBGYN thinks I am crazy. I started the Nuvaring in January of 2006 because of bad periods and side effects of various pills. It took awhile for my body to adjust to the ring, but it did after about 6 weeks. Everything started to run smoothly except for the fact that I had gone up an entire dress size without any changes to my diet and exercise routine. She told me that it was normal to gain about 5 pounds when you start the pill, but not 10 pounds in six weeks. So I believed her and continued using the Nuvaring. 12 months later, I had gone from a size 6 to a size 12. I went off the ring for two months and lost 2 inches off my hips, but the bad periods started again. I have now been back on the ring for 2 weeks and have already put 3 of the pounds back on. My OBGYN still does not believe this gain has anything to do with the ring, but I have spoken with other doctors who have ALL told me that it does and my doctor doesn't know what she is talking about - she was just repeating what the sales rep told her. Obviously it is based on your body chemistry, but the Nuvaring DEFINITELY causes rapid massive weight gain in some people.

I have been so desperate to find out why I've had all this weight gain,I've been searching the internet...and FINALLY I ran across this post!I've never in my life had a weight problem. I started NuvaRing 1 year ago, and have gained over 10 pounds, 6 of those pounds in the last month or so. I feel totally bloated, and my loose clothes are now very, very tight. I think I'm going to try going off NuvaRing for awhile and see what happens with the weight.

I completely understand what you are going through... I wish I had an answer for you. Six weeks ago I stopped the nuvaring after having been on it for 18 months. In that time, I went from a very slim 106lbs to 133lbs... Now, 6 weeks without it, I've missed my period, feel like I have a VERY large cyst on my ovary again and cannot lose the weight, no matter how strict with food and exercise i am. (At least I'm not depressed anymore!!! but... i'm still waiting for my sex drive to come back)ughhhh!!!!!

I can't belive it took me this long to figure it out....thank you all for posting so I can stop having a freakin heart attack every time I step on the scale. I started Nuvaring last summer and have gained 6 pounds, all between my stomach and upper thighs. Gross. That is a whole pants size for me. I have maintained my 20 year old weight for 15 years, I am 35 now. Through all those years and two kids, I stayed the same with a bit of continuous effort and awareness. But pop in the Nuvaring and all of a sudden I am a bloated cow. I have cut down to 1200 calories a day, worked out, and I could not make the scale budge. NOTHING has worked. I fianlly went to google with a suspicion and this is what I found. So I took out the ring last week adn am going back to the oral contraceptive I took before. Please oh please let the pounds go away quickly! I miss my old jeans and summer is coming!

I've also gained weight in my thighs and lower abdomen area. For a mommy of a two boys I WAS still the same size I was in high school. I think I'm going back to the patch.

In response to Nuvaring Weight gain posted by mommyof2bois:

I'm not on the Nuvaring but my sisters are and I just thought I'd put my two cents in: The info on the rings states that you shouldn't use the ring if you have trouble with too much insulin (or glucose) in your blood. Has anyone here ever been diagnosed with PCOS (Polycyctic Ovarian Syndrome)? Many studies have shown that the CAUSE of PCOS is Insulin Resistence. Many, many people don't know they have this until tested. I just found out in Jan. It will cause you to gain weight and make it hard to lose. Insulin Resistence just means your body can't process glucose so it builds up in your blood, and causes weight gain. If you are prone to this then the Nuvaring will only make things worse! My older sister and twin sister both used the NR before they got pregnant and didn't have any problems with weight, which is not to say that it won't cause weight gain because I'm sure it can. But you should look into it! Good luck
