» Feature Writer Joanna Karpasea-Jones - the depo shot

In response to the depo shot posted by allison221:

The depo shot lasts for 3 months after it is given so you will be 'on' it for that time anyway. With injections, it's not possible to stop any after-affects until the drug has worn off.

If you're having unusual side-effects, I'd go to your doctor to get them checked out during these 3 months and then make a decision as to whether you wish to continue with the depo shot.

» rlll911 - Not on my period the first time I got the shot

I got my shot today and started researching some websites tonight. I started my period maybe 11 days ago, but was still given the shot today. I know that it is effective 24hours after the injection IF it is given at the time of your period, but I can't find out anywhere how long it takes to be effective if it's not given at that time.

» Randi11 - the depo shot

In response to the depo shot posted by allison221:

The Depo shot will not always do what these women say it does. I and a friend of mine have been on the shot for years and there are side effects, but all drugs have them. I had the painful sex side effect and I just needed to use lubrication and it went away. So it is not the end of the world. Also, I did not gain weight on it for 5 years. The only thing I am realizing now is that a doctor will tell you that it takes 6 months to get back your period, but it does take longer 90% of the time, only a few are lucky to only have to wait 6 months. So think ahead if you think you might want to get pregnant. Hope this helps lessen your worries a little.

» krys21 - depo

I've been on the depo for like 5 months, I've had side effects like NO period, which at first freaked me out but now I love it. I know it will be a while after I get off before I get pregnant but I'm only 21 and not married, and still in college so I do not need to get pregnant. I could never remember to take the pill, I tried so hard but I just would forget and I couldn't take the chances. I'm in a relationship, almost 2 yrs, so sex is something we do. Sometimes its painful, sometimes its not. I don't have much sex drive, but I was that way on the pill too! All these birth control methods have some drawbacks, its important to read and learn about each of them before making your decision.

I had my first Depo shot in March, I started bleeding April 3rd and I am still bleeding. I did not go back for my other shot, I want off of this stuff. I was in alot of pain. Will the bleeding ever stop? Can you become pregnet with your tubes tied?
How long does it take to get it out of your system?

In response to Still bleeding since 3/3/07 since my depo shot in March posted by 12know:

i received the depo shot in october of 2005, well for the fisrt 3 weeks my period was light instead of non-existent as i had expected. after the first month my sex drive was GONE! I had began bleeding non stop for months and then it would stop for a few days and i would feel like my cycle was balancing out but then it would come right back. I was tired all the time and getting stressed out. well enough was enough. i got engaged and i immediately went to the doctor. After 16 months of bleeding i was told i had 2 options. i could take a pill that woul basically reset my cycle but i would have the period from Hell for at least a week or i could try birth control pills for a month to balance out my hormones. well i took the pills. i am not bleeding anymore, i only took them for the first month and now my period is somewhat regular. it comes every 26-35 days and only lasts for about 3 days. I think that you should see your doctor its a simple solution for this unexpected problem. I hope this has helped you

In response to Still bleeding since 3/3/07 since my depo shot in March posted by 12know:

Took two Depo-Provera shots. After the second one, I began bleeding, and continued for 10 weeks. Had an ultrasound, then a vaginial ultrasound. Had to have surgery, opted for hysterectomy, b/c I have 2 children and don't want anymore. My insurance said that I had to have exploratory surgery. I had two cysts removed that were possibly malignant, and had to be cauterized to stop the bleeding. Within the next 11/2, I managed to gain about 65 pounds, did I mention that I have NEVER been above 150lbs, even full term. My dermatologist wanted me to have a blood test, b/c my face and back were painfully broken out with Acne. My DHEAS level was elevated, so I was sent back to my family doctor, then referred to an Endocrinologist. He said that I had PCOS and that it is just genetic. I had called the Depo Provera nurses hotline to ask them about my excessive bleeding. She stated that the shots had never caused that. I am now horribly overweight, losing my beautiful hair, acne is under control, for now. I want to find out about the law suits against this dangerous drug. cyoung0458@yahoo.

In response to Still bleeding since 3/3/07 since my depo shot in March posted by 12know:

I've tried just about every kind of birth control pill, patch, or shot, and they all give me either long or continuous periods and make me moody. Depo gave me my period for months straight, I got checked for so many things, everything was fine, so it had to be the shot. When I don't use birth control (aside from condoms, which I always always always use) then I'm fine, but those pills and shots make me and my body crazy. A friend of mine (neither of us are doctors) were talking, and it seemed like people whose periods are naturally shorter than the average or longer than the average (my cycles are usually 5 or 6 weeks, instead of 28 days) have a lot more side effects. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but with hormones linked to so many other things, it makes some sense to me. Getting off of depo worked for me, but its good that you got everything checked out, just to be sure. Anyway, you're not alone in having the 'continuous bleeding' side effect.
