If your cycle is fine when you are not using hormonal contraceptives, I wouldn't bother with them. Since you always use condoms anyway, you don't have the issue of unwanted pregnancy, so I would steer clear of methods you know you are going to have side-effects with.

I had a depo shot in aug 97, I began bleeding shortly after. and continued to bleed until the next shot. my doc reccommended i get 1 more and if the bleeding continued we would stop. well it did continue for a year and a half. i was almost hospitalized because overtime my iron levels began to fall and I am anemic. Another doc put me on an ibuprophen regimin of 800ml a day to counteract whatever it was in the pill making me bleed for so long. It worked!!! but periods were irregular for 2 years.

» 4_5_831 - I started my shot in July 07.

The last two weeks before I got my second shot I experienced spotting continuously. It was only light and my doctor said not to worry. Before the shot I was on the Patch but it gave me horrible migraines, and left a painful rash where I had it. The rash would stay for around two or three weeks before it went away so I switch to the shot. It also was supposed to get rid of my period which would making cheerleading much easier. Anyways I only experienced mild tenderness and some spotting with the first shot. I got my second shot and the spotting continued to get worse. I was continuously spotting and everytime I went to the bathroom blood would gush out as though I had just cut myself. I am still spotting and my tenderness has gotten much worse. Anytime some one accidentally bumps me I feel as though they punched me. I've randomly experienced soreness and cramps. I read an article that said that bleeding usually ends after the third shot. Next Week I will be getting my third shot in hopes that this spotting and tenderness will stop.

» moibellabeauty - Depo shot? Awful!

I got my first shot well over a year ago and didn't have my period for the first month.
The next month it started and it hasn't stopped since. I asked my doctors if there was any way to make it stop and they said my best bet was to get my next shot & hope it made it stop. Overall I got two shots...which added up to having my period EVERY SINGLE DAY for over a year...and it honestly still hasn't completely stopped! On top of "defeating the purpose" I was dizzy,..and unlike most.. I lost weight...a LOT of weight. I went from weighing 125 to 104 and I looked disgusting.
It causes headaches..I was in and out of the doctor several times for pain in my abdomen..(they still don't know if the depo was the cause) and basically it turned my life upside-down. Yes it's convenient..But I wouldn't recommend it to ANYONE because as much as I've read up about it..99 percent of it is horrible. Very few people are satisfied with the results of this. Stick to the pill!

I wish I had found this thread before I got the shot. I always always against products that claimed to give you fewer or no periods. I should have stuck with my gut. I got the depo shot and now I've been bleeding for over 10 days straight and reading that someone bleed for a year? There is no way I will get the second shot! I've got my first period more than 10 years ago and never has it lasted more than 5 days...I'm pushing two weeks now and I hate it. And not to sound silly, but I got this as a method of birth control and it's working because I don't have sex when I'm bleeding!

In response to Can I still have children???? posted by miss_mimi06:

I'm 31 years old & I had the depo shot maybe about 4 going on 5 years now. I recently got married almost 2 years now & my husband has been trying to get me pregnant but no success. I have two children already, but wondering myself if the depo had anything to do with me not getting pregnant now. I only got ONE shot & bleed the whole first 3 months that I didn't bother to go back & get another one. I just think it's really strange that my husband has been releasing sperm every time we've had sex since we've been married & NO BABY!!

Seeing I only got one shot, I'm not understanding how that could have anything to do with us not getting pregnant!

If it's been 3 years of unprotected sex I would seek advice from a specialist. There are various tests such as ovulation and sperm tests to determine whether you or your husband has a fertility problem.

Thank you very much for sharing this with others.
Hopefully your experience will prevent other migraine sufferer's from going through these types of problems with depo-provera.

I suffered with migraines every month, badly, until recently. I used peppermint tea to stop one happening. If I drank two or three cups as soon as I felt any symptoms, it would stop it from developing. It doesn't work if you wait until you're really in pain, you have to drink it from the outset. It tastes foul, but worked for me.

I wish you luck in trying for a baby,

Joanna.
